The “PALIO OF SIENA” Experience

From the beginning of the 17th century the horse race which was run through the crowded streets of the old town, moved to the more controlled area of the “Campo” – the ground- such as the Sienese named the central square, the very heart of Siena.

The Palio was set to be preceded by a solemn procession of notables properly dressed up, flag waving and throwing and the rhythmic beat of drums. Such a magnificent scenery is still framing the nowadays event : but please don’t consider the Palio like a commemorative celebration with a fancy-dress procession.

The Palio is the peak of the city life, the “unveiled” Siena which we invite you to join.

Different districts of the town called “contrada” challenge in a wild race which evokes ancient rivalries: the passions arouse and bring to the surface the ties and the images of the past which come again to life twice a year -July 2nd and August 16th .

Let us make you feel the “thrill” of the event through a “full immersion” of two days

July 1st / August 15th
(from 10 am till about 12 am)
Walking through the richly decorated Siena with a professional escort who will provide information about the places of main interest in the town and history of the Palio traditions.

Visit to a few “contrada”, the city districts which compete in the Palio and the relevant museum where are preserved the trophies and the things which made the story of that “contrada”.

In order to “feel” the thrill of the event, you will attend the “trial run” and afterwards join the big dinner held in the streets of one contrada.

July 2nd / August 16th
(from 11 am till about 9 pm)
The day of the Palio starts with the “horse” blessing in the district church, a very peculiar ceremony with unusual characters!

Afterwards, you will be walked to the main stops of the historical procession with renaissance period dress and attend the impressive flag waving and throwing parade.

The procession will slowly move toward the Campo square and you will be accompanied to a favourable location with a view on square: here you will assist at the parade entering the square and enjoy the race.

Your escort will provide all useful information to let you properly understand what’s going on.

After Palio, will visit the winning “contrada” to see the celebrations which are supposed to continue all night long…
