Some historical hints...
Castellina, Radda and Gaiole formed the "Lega del Chianti" -Chianti League- a kind of local government for the country areas under Florence.

Due to rivalry between Florence and Siena, they were considered like the ultimate borders and suffered frequent raids of Siena soldiers until the definitive fall of Siena in 1555. Fortresses and Castles -some ruined, other still kept in good conditions- are the evidences of those dangerous times.

The flag of "Lega del Chianti" is the famous black rooster which later became the symbol of the Chianti Classico wine.
